Our organization's focus is on helping youth gain access to post-secondary education, so much of our work at MexEd's after-school program, which currently meets once a week at Washington Irving High School near Union Square, is academically oriented. Afterschool activities include providing homework help and tutoring, helping students study for the New York Regents Exams, conducting workshops on studying for and taking the SAT, and workshops on filling out college applications and applying to college. We also take the students off the high school site to go on college campus tours.
While academics are our focus we also engage in non-academic activities during the afterschool program. We try to incorporate a cultural component to these activities, choosing projects that are enriching and that reflect the students' Latino and Mexican cultural heritage.
We seek volunteer afterschool educators to work with our after-school program coordinator, Yesenia Ruiz, in planning and executing activities for the after-school program.
After-school educator position requirements:
- Self-motivated, creative individual able to work with the program coordinator to plan lessons, workshops, and activities that have a strong academic focus
- Attend the after-school program on a weekly basis (currently meets on Mondays, beginning at 2:30)
- Be sensitive to the cultural needs of our students
- Spanish speaking extremely helpful
If you are interested in serving as an after-school educator, please visit the Volunteer page and submit an application. If you have any questions about the position, please don't hesitate to send an e-mail to info@mexednyc.org. We will respond to your inquiry promptly. Thank you for your interest!
